Frequently Asked Questions
What is powder coating?
Powder coating is an extremely durable, dry finishing application. A dry powder is applied to grounded metal parts via a powder coating gun/system that provides and electrical charge to the powder itself as it is sprayed onto the grounded part. The parts are then cured in an oven to form a very durable, protective finish.
How Many Colours?
We stock a good range of colours here, over 100, however, there are over 7,000 available in powder coat land so colours are pretty much endless!
Why is powder better than traditional liquid paint?
Powder is primarily the preferred option over traditional liquid paint because of it's longevity and durability. Powders are designed to withstand the elements, chemicals & liquids without chipping or degrading over time. The limitless amount of colors, gloss levels, textures and finishes are also a major component of powders popularity.
Is it environmentally friendly?
Yes! Powder does not have the same solvents and VOCs that traditional liquid paint does. Excess powder can also be recycled and reused decreasing the amount of waste.
Do I have to remove the existing paint or coating?
Yes - Powder should always be applied over a completely bare/clean metal. We both chemical strip and aqua-blast to remove previous paints and coatings. Aqua blasting is the preferred method of cleaning a wheel which is done after chemical stripping as well. A correctly media blasted surface is ideal to ensure the powder has the proper surface to bite on to.
Can I apply multiple colors?
Absolutely! This process is called two tone (for two colours, three tone ( for three colours etc.. You can apply multiple colours if you're looking for custom masking, areas you do not want coated or for truly custom finishes like dormant and candy colours where multiple stages are required.
What is Out-gassing?
De-gassing is where the substrate (the item itself) is heated up in the oven first to "out-gass" or remove oils and pollutants from the substrate. Alloys and cast are particularly susceptible being porous. The pre-heating process helps remove the impurities and avoids the powder coat from reacting with the contaminants in the substrate.
Do you refurbish the whole of the wheel?
Yes we do. The whole wheel is chemically stripped, aqua-blasted inside, outside and even inside the wheel which is covered by the tyre! It is the only way to do a proper job!
How long for a set of car wheels to be powder coated?
We are able to turn around a set of wheels in one day which includes tyre removal and re-fitting. Customers are requested to get to the workshop for 8 o'clock and their vehicle is normally ready after 4.30 pm, ready to drive away.
When can tyres be refitted?
Immediately once the wheel temperature has reduced and the wheel is cool!
Do you remove the tyres?
Yes, we remove, refit and balance once the wheels are ready..
What is the best way to clean my newly painted wheels?
Certainly DON'T use a Traffic Film Remover - this will damage your new wheels. Indeed, we recommend you only use a soft sponge with a PH neutral cleaner to remove road grime and brake dust. We also DON'T recommend you allow car wash staff to use their hideous wheel cleaner on your newly painted wheels! Is loves to eat lacquer!
